Selection Box

Selection Box

In this brief we got 4 different choices of differing briefs to choose from, I was torn between the Narrative Fiction and Song lyric options.
After weighing them up I decided to go with the song lyric as I already liked the Queens of the Stone Age as a band and really liked their song,
'Go with the Flow'

First thing I did was read through the songs lyrics and break them down into my own interpretation and just some lyrics I really liked.

While looking over Queen of the Stone Age and their songs, I found 'Burn the Witch' which meant I had to choose between both songs.

Burn the Witch

I made a Pinterest board so I had somewhere to compile the art inspiration, colour themes, photography and style.

Formula

The first thing, besides research that I wanted to get down was the formula of the illustrations. For this brief I needed to create 2 illustrations along with a front cover. I needed to mark out what lyrics and images I will show in each page.

Collage

I experimented with making some collages as it gave me a visual of where I wanted to go with my illustrations.

Artists:

Jennie Harbour was an artist working in the 1920s, her illustrations are mostly black and white and made with pen and ink. The flowy, compact style is something that drew me to her.

Devon Bragg is the second illustrator I looked at, I liked the use of shape and line she used. The style I'll be aiming to produce is a mix between this and Jennie Harbour's work.

Franklin Booth, illustrator who has an exact style I want to portray using line art, however for this project I am going to simplify the detailing a good bit.

Development

Next I drew up my favourite of my thumbnails looking very closely at Franklin Booth and how he draws lines. I started with the characters in the image then made a few copies to see what different placement of the text would look like, as well as the background.
I decided my first idea was defiantly my best and that  applying the type digitally would also be my best bet.

Development

For this illustration, I found it a lot easier to create as I had the idea and simply needed to take the reference photo and paint over top.

After Crit:

After Crit with Tony, he pointed out that he really enjoyed this particular image and much favoured the brighter more coloured illustrations I made.
He also pointed out with the aesthetic and vibe of the song my images should maybe portray a darker, more sinister vibe.

Cover Redo

Tony explained that along with the colours I had chosen he also liked the fuller pen images I created, so I decided to redo the drawing

Cover edits:

These are variations of my illustration I created while going through edits on photoshop, this was mainly to find some kind of vibe I wanted for the text.
