Illustrators Toolkit:
Pen and Ink

Pen and Ink

This module is about expanding and developing our toolkits as illustrators, the first tool we looked at was Pen and Ink. The aim of this task is to do as much work and experimenting with the media as possible.

Looking at artists like, Paul Hogarth and his use of line to show many different textures and shadows.
I adored Ian Millers illustrations also, and strived to come somewhere close to his beauty and skill throughout this project.
I looked at Charles Dana Gibson and his ability to show likeness and personality in using just one media.

Artist Inspo:

I looked at Charles Dana Gibson and Robin Jacques's stuff and tried to replicate that. I liked the shading lines in Charles work and the simple style in Robins.

General use of Dip-Pen:

I practiced just general drawing with dip pen, I did some life drawings of classmates as well as using photography as reference. I also used an improvised brush which was a feather and created some images with that.

Paul Hogarth:

Examples of fine liner work, for these I looked at Paul Hogarth and again created portraits and still lives to get used to the media.

Chris Ware:

I really enjoyed working with dip pen, with this I looked at the work of Chris Ware who created sketches in his books that were the exact type of illustration I was interested in. And so, I created these pieces.

I went through the sketches and tried to copy Chris Wares illustrations from his book and I keep up with that style while trying to inject more realism and really enjoyed these last few illustrations.

I put an image into black and white to see if I enjoyed the look it gave, I preferred the blue so I kept that.

Drawing of a room research:

For my drawing of a room I studied more sketches from Chris Ware's sketchbook. I focused on the drawings of buildings and looked closely at the types of lines he used to show different amounts of shadow.
