First Brief:
First brief we were given was to create a 8 page comic inspired by and containing the lines of a nursery rhyme. We were paired in twos (one illustratior and one graphic designer) and given the rhyme randomly. I was paired with Jess Higgs and we got given Three Blind Mice.

Three Blind Mice, Three Blind Mice
See how they run, see how they run
The all run after the farmers wife
Who cut off their rails with a carving knife.
Have you ever seen such a thing in your life
As Three Blind Mice.

When we talked, Jess and I immediately decided to make the comic dark and take a more sinister approach to the rhyme in general, due to the nature of the lyrics. We put together a selection of images and styles to help us navigate our ideas.

This was a few of our first saved images.

After this I looked at all these artists individually, I specifically looked at: Junji ito, Svnddlsnts(on Instagram), godlikeviolence(on Instagram), Johnny Dombrowski and Kazuo Umezu.

I created some small drawings to get more ideas of style and ways to enhance the vibe of the comic.

Second most important thing was to establish a layout of what's going to go on each page, we decided to use 4 pages for the comic and leave two for the front and back covers then the other two inner pages to contain patterns.

Here we decided on two main points, the whole comic would take place in and out of the farmers wives kitchen. We also decided that unique designs for each eye on each mice would be a interesting feature to add to the comic. It was by this idea we also got an idea for the patterned pages, which would include patterns made from the different eye designs.

Next thing to do was to create a mock up of the storyboard, going by our initial ideas of taking place in the kitchen, having a sinister feel with the cruel farmers wife and going along with the storyline of the mice losing their tails.

This was my first idea, which both me and Jess didn't like and felt an opening page which had the mice be seen running into the kitchen would make for a more coherent story.

This was my second design which we both much preferred. From here I designed the two middle pages where we decided a revel on the wife holding a weapon would work very effectively. We wanted to use the two pages sitting next to each other to our advantage.

This ended up bring the final design of the storyboard draft.

The next step was to go in and refine the sketch.

After this I gave Jess the panels to add some colour to as I didn't have time to finish it myself, she did a very good job and with her title the whole comic comes together very well.
